What is e-passport? : Chip based e-passports are launched for the security of passengers

India introduces a chip-based e-passport to ensure the security of travelers. The government of India has introduced chip-based e-passports across the country, with the aim of ensuring the security of travelers and enhancing international travel.

What is an e-Passport?

An e-passport is a chip-based passport in which all your information, such as your biometric information, digital signature, face data, and everything else, is stored in a chip. This is the new update for passports.

These passports are equipped with radio frequency identification and an antenna embedded as an inlay.

From 1 April 2025, all new passports being made in India will be e-passports only.

In the old passport, all your information was written on the passport, but in the new e-passport, all your information will be stored inside a chip.

When the authority verifies it, it will scan the chip of your passport, and then all your information will come into their computer.

This means that any person who does not have a machine to scan the chip of the passport will not be able to access your information from your passport.

How do I know if my passport is an e-passport?

If a passport has a chip symbol on it, then it will be an e-passport. You can see what the chip symbol looks like in the image given below.
